When the Nations Shake, the Bride Walks in Favor
March 9, 2026Understanding Spiritual Discernment in the Days We Are Living In
Jesus warned that one of the defining characteristics of the last days would be deception. False voices, false teachings, and spiritual confusion would increase. In such a time, believers must develop their discernment to perceive truth beneath what is visible and recognize what is truly from God.
Discernment is not a single gift or ability. Scripture reveals that it operates in multiple layers, each helping believers navigate life, relationships, spiritual warfare, and God’s purposes with wisdom.
Discernment Is Available to Those Who Ask
Discernment is not reserved for prophets, pastors, or spiritually elite believers only. Scripture teaches us that discernment is a grace God freely gives to those who seek Him.
James 1:5
“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.”
Discernment begins with asking. God does not withhold wisdom from His people. He delights in giving it generously to those who seek it of Him.
James also reminds us:
James 4:2
“You do not have because you do not ask.”
Many believers struggle unnecessarily because they have never intentionally asked God for discernment. Yet the invitation is open. The Holy Spirit is eager to train our spiritual senses so that we can recognize truth, perceive what God is doing, and walk wisely in every situation.
Discernment is not reserved for a few.
It is available to everyone who asks the Lord for it.
The Biblical Layers of Discernment
Scripture reveals several dimensions of discernment that work together in the life of a believer.
1. Discerning Between Good and Evil
Hebrews 5:14
“But solid food belongs to those who are mature, who through constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.”
The most foundational layer of discernment is the ability to distinguish between good and evil. The writer of Hebrews explains that this ability develops through maturity and consistent engagement with God’s Word.
Spiritual discernment is like a muscle. It grows stronger the more it is exercised. As believers immerse themselves in Scripture and walk with the Holy Spirit, their ability to recognize truth becomes sharper.
In a world where moral boundaries are increasingly blurred, believers must anchor their understanding of good and evil in the Word of God rather than the shifting standards of culture.
2. Discerning the Voice of God
John 10:27
“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.”
One of the most important aspects of discernment is learning to recognize the voice of the Good Shepherd.
God speaks to His people through Scripture, through the Holy Spirit, and sometimes through circumstances or wise counsel. But His voice must be distinguished from many other voices that compete for our attention.
The more time we spend in God’s presence, the more familiar His voice becomes. Just as a child recognizes the voice of their parent in a crowded room, believers who cultivate intimacy with God learn to recognize His leading.
In times of confusion, the ability to hear and recognize God’s voice anchors us in truth.
3. Discerning the Will of God
Romans 12:2
“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.”
Discernment is not only about detecting deception. It is also about recognizing what God is doing and aligning with Him.
Paul teaches that when our minds are renewed by God’s Word, we become able to discern the will of God. This means we learn to distinguish between what is merely possible and what is truly God’s direction.
Many believers struggle with decisions because they rely only on logic or circumstance. But spiritual discernment allows us to perceive the quiet guidance of the Holy Spirit.
Discernment protects believers from misalignment and helps them walk in the path God has prepared.
4. Discerning the Motives of the Heart
Psalm 1:1
“Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly.”
Discernment also operates in the realm of relationships. Psalm 1 begins with a warning about the influence of ungodly counsel.
Not all advice is wise advice. Not all voices carry God’s perspective.
Discernment helps believers recognize the spiritual posture and motives behind the counsel they receive. The people or influencers we listen to shape the direction of our lives, and we need to be very careful how we consume information and ideas that inform our thoughts and opinions.
Remaining blessed requires choosing wise Godly counsel and recognizing when advice is rooted in worldly thinking rather than godly wisdom. Even good people can be ungodly, where God is not top priority in their lives.
5. Discerning the Times and Seasons
1 Chronicles 12:32
“The men of Issachar understood the times and knew what Israel should do.”
There is a prophetic dimension of discernment that involves understanding the spiritual season we are living in.
The tribe of Issachar was known for their ability to interpret the times and recognize what actions were required.
Jesus rebuked the religious leaders of His day because they could interpret weather patterns but failed to recognize the spiritual moment of the Messiah’s arrival.
Believers who discern the times are able to align their lives with God’s unfolding purposes rather than being caught unaware by spiritual shifts.
6. Discerning Spiritual Realities
2 Kings 6:16-17
“Those who are with us are more than those who are with them.”
When Elisha’s servant saw the enemy army surrounding them, fear filled his heart. But when God opened his eyes, he saw the mountain filled with heavenly armies protecting them.
Discernment allows believers to recognize that physical circumstances are not the full story. There is a spiritual realm operating behind what we see.
Faith grows stronger when believers understand that God’s unseen resources far outweigh the visible challenges we face.
7. Discerning of Spirits
1 Corinthians 12:10
“To another the discerning of spirits.”
Among the gifts of the Holy Spirit is the discerning of spirits. This gift enables believers to recognize the spiritual source behind certain actions, teachings, or manifestations.
It distinguishes whether something is coming from:
- the Holy Spirit
- the human spirit
- a demonic spirit
In a world where spiritual experiences and supernatural claims are increasingly common, this gift helps protect believers from deception.
8. Discerning Truth from False Teaching
1 John 4:1
“Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God.”
The early church faced many false teachers, and the apostle John instructed believers to test what they heard.
Discernment guards the mind against teachings that sound spiritual but are not grounded in the truth of Scripture.
In an age where sermons, teachings, and opinions circulate globally through digital platforms, believers must develop biblical discernment to evaluate what they hear.
Truth must always be measured against the Word of God.
9. Self-Discernment: Examining the Heart
1 Corinthians 11:31
“For if we would judge ourselves, we would not be judged.”
Discernment must also be applied inwardly. Scripture calls believers to examine their own hearts and motives before the Lord.
Self-discernment keeps believers humble and sensitive to the conviction of the Holy Spirit. Without it, spiritual pride can easily take root.
When believers regularly invite the Holy Spirit to search their hearts, they remain aligned with God’s truth and grace.
The Invitation to Ask
Discernment is spiritual clarity. It is the ability to see what God sees and respond accordingly.
In times of deception, confusion, and spiritual conflict, discernment becomes one of the believer’s greatest safeguards. It protects the heart, guides decisions, reveals truth, and keeps us aligned with the voice of the Holy Spirit.
And Scripture reminds us that this gift begins with a simple posture: asking.
James 1:5
“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach.”
And James also reminds us:
James 4:2
“You do not have because you do not ask.”
The invitation is open.
Ask God for discernment.
Ask Him to train your spiritual senses.
Ask Him to sharpen your perception of truth.
The Lord is faithful to answer those who seek Him.
