Jeremiah 23:25-26 (LSB)
“I have heard what the prophets have said who prophesy a lie in My name, saying, ‘I had a dream, I had a dream!’ … prophets of the deception of their own heart.”

Covetousness learns the language of faith. Personal ambition becomes prophetic vision. Presumption becomes declaration. Desire becomes revelation, where what they want begins to be presented as what God has said.

Micah 2:2 (TPT)
“They covet someone’s field and seize it for themselves, and they take over his house as well. They defraud a man of his home and another man of his inheritance.”

Scripture warns that this can happen wherever spiritual influence and access to resources meet. There are those who “covet fields and then seize them.”

Jeremiah 6:13 (TPT)
“From the smallest to the greatest, they are greedy for corrupt profits; prophet and priest alike, they all practice deceit.”

Jeremiah places greed for gain alongside spiritual leadership and deceit, saying, “from the prophet even to the priest they all practice deceit.”

1 Timothy 6:5 (LSB)
“And constant friction between men of depraved mind and deprived of the truth, who suppose that godliness is a means of gain.”

Paul warns of those who imagine godliness as a means of gain.

Jeremiah 23:16 (LSB)
“…They are leading you into vanity; They speak a vision of their own heart, Not from the mouth of Yahweh.”

Covetousness begins as “the deceit of their own heart.” When left unchecked, it searches for a mechanism through which it can acquire what is desired. Position, relationships, and influence become that mechanism. Even prophecy and perceived divine authority become mechanisms when someone attaches the name of God to the desire of their own heart.

A person can desire something so intensely that desire begins masquerading as revelation. “I want this” becomes “God showed me this.” Personal ambition becomes “Kingdom assignment.” Pressure becomes “obedience.” Acquisition becomes “favor.” Fabrications become “speaking in faith.”

Yet biblical faith has an object: God and His Word.

Faith agrees with what God has spoken. Faith can wait. Faith can be tested. Faith welcomes truth because the God upon whom faith rests is Truth. Faith has no requirement for fabricated stories, concealed information, manipulated relationships, or borrowed spiritual authority to accomplish what God has promised.

Gehazi provides a sobering picture in 2 Kings 5:20-27. Elisha had refused Naaman’s resources, yet Gehazi coveted what had been offered. He pursued Naaman and borrowed Elisha’s prophetic credibility to gain access to something Elisha had already refused. He fabricated a story, obtained the resources, concealed them, and then concealed his actions from Elisha.

The progression is revealing: Covetous desire → borrowed spiritual authority → fabricated story → access to another person’s resources → concealment.

Gehazi even began his pursuit with spiritual language: “As Yahweh lives…”

The presence of God’s name within a declaration therefore cannot authenticate the declaration. Spiritual vocabulary cannot sanctify covetousness. Prophetic language cannot transform deception into faith.

Jesus gives us the test:

Matthew 7:16 (LSB)
“You will know them by their fruits…“

Paul gives us another safeguard. When administering financial resources, he deliberately created accountability because he desired to do what was honorable “not only in the sight of the Lord, but also in the sight of men” (2 Corinthians 8:20-21). Biblical stewardship welcomes transparency. Integrity can withstand examination. Truth lives in the light.

For those serving under spiritual authority, this distinction matters deeply. Submission never requires participation in deception. Honor never requires surrendering discernment. Someone else’s “conviction” does not automatically become your instruction from God.

We are commanded to test what we hear. “Test all things; hold fast what is good” (1 Thessalonians 5:21). The Bereans were commended because they examined even Paul’s teaching against Scripture (Acts 17:11). John tells believers to “test the spirits” (1 John 4:1).

God awakens discernment in people who have lived under unhealthy spiritual influence. Things once accepted without question suddenly become visible. Words that once carried tremendous weight begin to be examined against Scripture. Patterns become recognizable. Contradictions become apparent. The Holy Spirit begins separating the voice of God from the voice of false influence surrounding them.

Come Out of False Agreement

The Lord is awakening people who have unknowingly come into agreement with things He never spoke.

He is bringing hidden motives into the light and restoring discernment to those whose discernment has been suppressed by loyalty, fear, dependency, misplaced honor, or perceived spiritual authority. He is teaching His people again to recognize His voice for themselves.

There are people who will begin looking back over conversations, declarations, financial decisions, relationships, and assignments with fresh clarity. Things that once appeared spiritual will suddenly become recognizable for what they are. The fruit will reveal the tree.

The Lord is calling His people out of agreement with covetousness disguised as vision, presumption disguised as faith, manipulation disguised as obedience, and deception disguised as prophetic declaration.

Where hearts have become entangled, God is bringing conviction. Where consciences have become quiet, He is awakening them. Where discernment has been surrendered, He is restoring it. Where people have participated through ignorance, He is giving opportunity for repentance, cleansing, restitution where required, and a return to walking in truth.

And for those exercising leadership, this is also an invitation from the mercy of God. He is exposing what He intends to heal. He is calling hearts away from ambition, possession, control, and the fear of losing what they have built. He is calling His servants back to clean hands, pure hearts, transparent stewardship, and complete dependence upon Him as Provider.

God does provide for what He authors. His provision can therefore be received with clean hands.

There is a separation taking place between what God actually spoke and what human desire added to it.

Return to the Word. Test the fruit. Bring hidden things into the light. Allow the Holy Spirit to examine every agreement you have made because someone told you, “God said.”

You belong to Yeshua. You hear His voice.

And where His voice is bringing conviction, follow Him into the light.

Your tongue is your glory. What you speak steers your life. Invite the Holy Spirit to pilot your words, and watch alignment unlock your next season.

Matthew 12:37
“Your very words will be used as evidence, and your words will declare you either innocent or guilty.”

Jesus makes it clear: what comes out of our mouths either justifies us or condemns us. The question then is: what kind of words justify, and which condemn? To answer that, we must understand God’s purpose for the tongue.

David gives us a key insight in Psalm 16:

Psalms‬ ‭16‬:‭8‬-‭9‬ ‭[NKJV‬‬]
“I have set the Lord always before me; Because He is at my right hand I shall not be moved. Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoices; My flesh also will rest in hope.”

When Peter quotes this passage in Acts 2, preaching on the day of Pentecost, he adds a Spirit-revealed clarity:

Acts‬ ‭2‬:‭25‬-‭26‬ ‭[NKJV]
“For David says concerning Him: ‘I foresaw the Lord always before my face, For He is at my right hand, that I may not be shaken. Therefore my heart rejoiced, and my tongue was glad; Moreover my flesh also will rest in hope.”

What David called his glory, Peter identifies as his tongue. The Word of God reveals that our tongues are our glory. God gave us tongues for one supreme purpose: to bring Him glory.

Anything that comes out of our mouths that does not glorify God is a misrepresentation of Him. Scripture is uncomfortably honest about this: it is sin. It is what condemns us. We are justified only when our words rightly reflect the King we represent.

James doesn’t soften this truth:

‭‭James‬ ‭3‬:‭6‬ ‭[NKJV‬‬]
“And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. The tongue is so set among our members that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell.”

Not all tongues combined … the tongue. Singular. Left unchecked, every human tongue carries destructive potential. But God, rich in mercy, has not left us without a remedy.

Three Practical Steps to Redeeming Our Tongues

1. Call the problem by its right name

Change begins with honesty. As long as we excuse, minimize, or rename the issue, nothing changes. Scripture calls it sin, and when we agree with God in truth, grace meets us there.

2. Confess and receive cleansing

1 John 1:7-9 reminds us that confessing our sin unlocks forgiveness and continual cleansing. God is not looking for perfection, but honesty. When light exposes the issue and we respond humbly, cleansing follows.

3. Be filled with the Holy Spirit

On the day of Pentecost, the disciples received tongues of fire: a new fire that replaced the hellish fire James described. Immediately, they spoke in tongues and glorified God. The same pattern appears in Acts 10 with Cornelius’ household.

James likens the tongue to a rudder:

James‬ ‭3‬:‭4‬-‭5‬ ‭[NKJV‬‬]
“Look also at ships: although they are so large and are driven by fierce winds, they are turned by a very small rudder wherever the pilot desires. Even so the tongue is a little member and boasts great things. See how great a forest a little fire kindles!”

The Holy Spirit must be the pilot of our lives, steering that small but powerful rudder. Without Him, our words expose us. With Him, our words align us.

Deuteronomy‬ ‭30‬:‭19‬ ‭[NKJV‬‬]
“I call heaven and earth as witnesses today against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live;”

The stakes are eternal. Destiny follows declaration. We either speak death, or we speak life into our future. Enter your new season by speaking in agreement with God. Choose life.

Prayer

Father God, I come before You in humility and truth. I acknowledge that my tongue was created to glorify You alone. Where my words have misrepresented You, I repent and receive Your cleansing through the blood of Jesus.

Holy Spirit, I invite You to fill me afresh. Take full control of the words that come from my mouth. Let my tongue be a vessel of worship, faith, and alignment with Heaven. Guard my speech, steer my life, and cause my words to justify me, glorify You, and release Your purposes on the earth.

I declare that my mouth will speak life, truth, and glorify You. Be glorified, Father, In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.

Your very words will be used as evidence, and your words will declare you either innocent or guilty.

Matthew 12:37

Essentially, what comes out of our mouths, will either justify us, or condemn us. So, how do we know what justifies and what condemns? To understand that, we need to look at what purpose God gave us for our tongues.

To find God’s purpose for our tongues, we have to look at two scriptures. One Old Testament scripture written by King David, and the other, a New Testament scripture where Peter quotes David’s words, but it is quoted in a way that brings out a meaning that is not apparent in the Old Testament.

In Psalm 16:8-9, David says, I have set the Lord always before me; Because He is at my right hand I shall not be moved. Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoices; My flesh also will rest in hope.

Then, Peter preaching his famous sermon on the day of pentecost when the crowd had gathered to this raucous the disciples were causing, says this in Acts 2:25-26, For David says concerning Him: ‘I foresaw the Lord always before my face, For He is at my right hand, that I may not be shaken. Therefore my heart rejoiced, and my tongue was glad; Moreover my flesh also will rest in hope.

What David described as his glory, Peter uncovers under the influence of the Holy Spirit, is his tongue. David’s tongue was his glory. Our tongues are our glory. Our creator gave us tongues with one supreme purpose – to glorify Him.

Anything that comes out of our mouths, that does not glorify God, is a misrepresentation of Him. In other words, to be brutally honest, it is in actual fact sin. It is what condemns us. We are only justified when the words that proceed out of our mouths, bring glory to God, and represent the sovereign King of all the universe in a manner He deserves. Anything other than that is a problem for us.

James 3:6 puts it this way, And the tongue is a fire! It can be compared to the sum total of wickedness and is the most dangerous part of our human body. It corrupts the entire body and is a hellish flame! It releases a fire that can burn throughout the course of human existence.

Singular. “The tongue” is a fire…, not everybody’s tongues combined! That is a pretty damning statement from James. There is actually a flame from the pit of hell in everyone’s tongues! But, fortunately for us we have a father in heaven who is full of mercy. But that mercy does require a part to play from us.

So, here are three simple practical structural steps to dealing with the problem of our tongues.

Step #1: Call our problem by its right name. It’s very important that we become honest at this first step. So long as we use some excuses to cover up a problem, as long as we try some way to condone it, or pretend that it isn’t really there, or that it isn’t a serious problem, nothing will happen! We have to come to the moment of honesty. And that moment of honesty is to call it what it is: sin. Whenever we come to the moment of truth, God always moves in and helps.

Step #2: Confess, and receive forgiveness and cleansing. 1 John 1:7-9, But if we keep living in the pure light that surrounds him, we share unbroken fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, continually cleanses us from all sin. If we boast that we have no sin, we’re only fooling ourselves and are strangers to the truth. But if we freely admit our sins when his light uncovers them, he will be faithful to forgive us every time. God is just to forgive us our sins because of Christ, and he will continue to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Notice the call to honesty in that verse. Once we’re honest with ourselves about our problem, we can confess it and receive forgiveness and cleansing.

Step #3: Receive the Holy Spirit, so He can be our pilot and steer us on course with what comes out of our mouths. On the day of pentecost, the disciples received tongues of fire – this is a new fire that replaces the hellish fire already in our tongues, that James describes. As soon as they were baptized by the Holy Spirit, they spoke in other tongues and glorified God. Cornelius and his entire family, in Acts 10, also, were baptized by the Holy Spirit and began to speak in tongues and glorify God. The only way we can keep our tongues from declaring us guilty, is to be full of the Holy Spirit. James 3:4-5 says, Look also at ships: although they are so large and are driven by fierce winds, they are turned by a very small rudder wherever the pilot desires. Even so the tongue is a little member and boasts great things. The Holy Spirit needs to pilot our ships by controlling this small rudder in our mouths. The stakes are astronomical: Our destinies are only determined by what comes out of our mouths. We step into our new season only by what we speak from our mouths.

So, let’s take a moment to get honest before Jesus. Pray this prayer with me:

Lord Jesus, I have a problem, I sin with my tongue! Where my tongue has not brought glory to You, I ask for your forgiveness. And I thank you for your sacrifice on the cross that brings forgiveness to my sins when I take ownership of them, and confess them to you in honesty. I ask that you send your Holy Spirit to help me to guard my heart with all diligence, so that only springs of life flow forth from my mouth, continuously glorifying Abba Father, and bringing honor to His Name. Today I hand over total control of my tongue to Your Holy Spirit, so that from this day forth, whatever proceeds out of my mouth, only brings glory to Your Name, Father God. [Take a moment to just glorify God with your own words] My tongue is my glory, and I just glorify You Abba Father, You are glorious father God, You are Holy father. Holy, Holy, Holy! Glorious, Father God. Fill me with Your Spirit afresh Father God.
