Fear Not the Reproach of Man
June 28, 2026Romans 9:21-23 (NKJV)
“Does not the potter have power over the clay, from the same lump to make one vessel for honor and another for dishonor… that He might make known the riches of His glory on the vessels of mercy, which He had prepared beforehand for glory.”
The Lord forms people who can carry His character and authority. He prepares vessels that can faithfully steward the weight of His presence and fullness of His glory. Though the image of clay in the Potter’s hands is well known, God’s process can easily be overlooked.
Paul reminds us that the Potter has complete authority over the clay. He forms every vessel according to His purpose. Throughout Scripture, God often works through contrast. Vessels of dishonor and vessels of honor frequently stand side by side. Pharaoh prepared Moses for deliverance. Saul prepared David for the throne. Haman prepared Esther for her appointed moment in history.
The Lord uses resistance as part of your preparation. The greatest instruments of your formation are often the very people who oppose you. The misunderstanding, rejection, delay, betrayal, and resistance you have endured have all remained within the sovereign hand of the Master Potter. Nothing has been wasted.
Before the vessel can be shaped, the clay must first be centered. Every wobble, inconsistency, and imbalance is brought into alignment beneath the Potter’s hand. The hidden work of God always begins by establishing the heart.
Then comes the shaping. The walls are built slowly and deliberately. Pressure is applied. Weak places are strengthened. Hard and calloused imperfections are removed. The vessel gradually takes the form the Potter intended from the beginning. A vessel prepared for greater capacity.
After the shaping comes the shelf. A hidden season. A waiting season. A drying season. One that often feels like abandonment. Yet the Potter has not forgotten the vessel. He is preparing it for what comes next. The furnace.
The fire strengthens what was formed by the Potter’s hands. Every remaining impurity is removed. Weakness gives way to strength. Sometimes the vessel passes through the fire more than once until it is able to carry the purpose for which it was created. Greater glory.
Rest in the understanding that your hidden season is not abandonment. The Potter is shaping you for His greater glory. Your capacity is increasing. Your faith is strengthening. Stay the course. Yield to His hands. Trust His process.
Remain steadfast through every season of shaping and refinement. God is preparing you as a vessel of honor, capable of carrying His glory wherever He sends you. Every season of refinement has been increasing your capacity to carry more of His presence, so that the riches of His glory may be revealed through your life.
