Prepared For Greater Glory
June 29, 2026Psalm 139:23-24 (LSB)
“Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me and know my anxious thoughts; And see if there be any hurtful way in me, And lead me in the everlasting way.”
David closes Psalm 139 with a prayer of surrender that invites God to do His deepest work within us. Here, spiritual formation begins as we willingly place every part of our lives before the Lord, trusting that He who knows us completely also loves us perfectly. David’s prayer unfolds as a deliberate progression, moving from examination to transformation, and finally into a life led by the Spirit.
1. Search Me
Psalm 139:23a
“Search me, O God…”
Spiritual formation begins with invitation. David opens every area of his life to God’s searching gaze. Nothing hidden. Nothing withheld. The Lord already knows us completely, yet He delights in our willing surrender. His lasting work of transformation begins when we step into His light and invite Him to examine every part of our lives.
2. Know My Heart
Psalm 139:23b
“…and know my heart.”
We invite the Lord to look beyond outward actions and examine the motivations beneath them. He weighs our desires, affections, intentions, and loyalties. Spiritual maturity grows as our inner life increasingly reflects His character and our desires become aligned with His.
3. Try Me
Psalm 139:23c
“Try me…”
We invite the Lord to refine what He has examined. Testing reveals the authenticity of our faith and forms the character of Christ within us. Just as gold is purified in the fire, seasons of refinement remove impurities and strengthen what is genuine. Every trial held within God’s hands becomes an instrument of spiritual formation.
4. Know My Anxious Thoughts
Psalm 139:23d
“…and know my anxious thoughts.”
We invite the Lord to expose the hidden patterns of our thinking. Fear, worry, pride, assumptions, and strongholds lose their influence as His truth fills our minds. Spiritual transformation reaches even into the thoughts that shape our responses. As our minds are renewed by His Word, we begin to think with greater peace, wisdom, and discernment.
5. See If There Is Any Hurtful Way In Me
Psalm 139:24a
“And see if there be any hurtful way in me.”
We invite the Lord to reveal anything that does not originate from Him. Every hidden idol, every selfish ambition, every sinful pattern, and every path that leads away from God’s purposes comes into the light. The Great Physician faithfully identifies what must be removed so that abundant life may flourish.
6. Lead Me In The Everlasting Way
Psalm 139:24b
“And lead me in the everlasting way.”
Only after inviting God’s searching, refining, and cleansing work does David ask to be led. The everlasting way is the path of life, truth, righteousness, and eternal purpose. The Lord delights to guide those whose hearts remain yielded to Him. His leadership flows naturally from surrendered lives that trust Him completely.
The Lord continues to form His people today just as He formed David. He searches what is hidden, refines what is genuine, renews the mind, removes every harmful way, and faithfully leads those who surrender to Him. Every invitation into His presence is an invitation to deeper transformation. Yield every part of your life to His loving hands. He is preparing a people who reflect His character before they carry His authority, and who walk in the everlasting way for His glory.
